Taking part in an Instagram takeover

The official University Instagram account has an audience of 20,000 followers, 44% of whom are aged between 18 to 24. Our audience demographic on Instagram is different from our audiences on Facebook and Twitter, and therefore our content is too.

In the summer of 2017, we introduced Instagram takeovers to our channel which gives current students the opportunity to share their St Andrews experience to a wider audience. Instagram takeovers allow for different aspects of University life to be showcased, and since 2017 we have shown over 100 different perspectives of life at St Andrews. Various societies, sports clubs, student presidents and researchers have got involved, and takeovers have taken place from New Zealand to Los Angeles.

Instagram takeovers are popular with our audience, and since starting them, our audience has grown by nearly 12,000 followers. In the beginning, we had to recruit and promote the takeovers actively, but through increasing popularity, people now come directly to us which is a fortunate position to be in.

While we try to accommodate all takeover requests, sometimes this is not possible as the date requested has already been taken.

Our Instagram takeover schedule fills up quickly. Therefore if you message on the same week you are looking to hold your takeover, it is unlikely there will be availability.

If you are interested, let us know as far in advance as possible of when you would like to do a takeover. This will increase the chances of you getting the date you want.

To find out more about Instagram takeovers or to take part, please email [email protected] or [email protected].
