Latest updates from the Digital Communications team for August 2022.

2023 postgraduate course pages launched

The 2023 postgraduate course pages were launched last week. The pages have been redesigned and for the first time use central data to pull in key information such as entry requirements and course dates.

This has been a big project to undertake and has involved colleagues working together from Academic Registry, Admissions, IT Services and Publications.

Redesigned undergraduate course pages will follow in September.

Digital Communication interns

Our student interns finished their internship with us earlier this month. Laura and Olivia were involved in a range of activities during their internship including creating the 2023 undergraduate course pages, managing the editorial calendar, improving existing web content, creating a prototype website for Accommodation, Conferences and Events, and migrating scholarship information to a new design.

Although only with us for six weeks, they were valued members of the team and completed a lot of work that would not be possible without them.

You can read about Laura and Olivia’s experience in the Digital Communications team on our blog.

Business Transformation

The Business Transformation website has been migrated from Terminalfour (old design) to Terminalfour (new design). The new site now meets accessibility requirements.

Scottish Web Folk

On Friday 12 August, members of the team attended the Scottish Web Folk meet-up at the University of Dundee. Scottish Web Folk is a great opportunity to meet with similar digital teams across the Scottish higher education sector to discuss ideas for improvement and collaboration.

The National Library of Scotland (web archiving), the University of Edinburgh (content migration) and Tracy Payle from Pickle Jar Communications (meaningful audience insights) gave presentations, followed by an open discussion on topics including digital engagement and accessibility audits.

Accessibility improvements

The team have completed work to audit and update accessibility issues on the core University site. The Government Cabinet Office are satisfied that the issues they identified have been fixed. The University’s accessibility statement is also now compliant with their standards.

Our accessibility score is now above the industry benchmark. The University score is 89/100 compared to 83/100 for the education industry. However, there is a lot of work remaining to improve accessibility standards, particularly for PDF documents – there are over 4,000 files that need to be audited.
